Proteins have a variety of functions. Some of them, like enzymes, need ATP to work, it is there source of energy. Some proteins are receptors and they have small proteins or fats that bind to a pocket and activate them. Once a protein is active it may go on to activate other proteins or it could be a transcription factor which activates the necessary parts of the DNA.
