X-rays and other types of ionising radiation can damage cells by breaking the DNA strands. The broken DNA can cause the cells to go wrong when they reproduce and cause cancer. The chance of getting cancer from an x-ray depends on the amount of radiation that the patient gets. For almost all medical x-rays the chances of getting cancer from the x-ray is tiny.
