So there are several different parts to the ear. You need the inner structures of the ear to help translate soundwaves into the neural impulses that go to our brain and can then be interpreted into sound as we know it. The outer ear (the bit we can see) is called the pinna and is made up of cartilage. It acts as a satellite dish that ‘catches’ all the sound waves and then focuses them down in to the ear drum and the inner ear– amplifying the signal. If we didn’t have the pinna to catch the sound waves, there’s a chance that the waves would just pass us by without entering our inner ear and then we’d miss the sounds completely!
