Extraction of nucleic acid (DNA) from blood and saliva samples. Setting up a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and running the PCR amplicons on a Cardiac Risk Randox Biochip Array. After the Lab work I participate in the analysis of the genotype data which is used to estimate genetic risk of CHD when used in combination with traditional CHD risk factors e.g. blood pressue and blood lipid profile.
This means that those with a high genetic predispositon to CHD can be offered lipid-lowering treatment such as Statins – thus preventing a heart attack and subsequently saving lives. Current methods of CHD prediction do not include genetic susceptibilty therefore this test will be very useful in CHD prevention.
