Tricky question! Some scientists recently said it was the chicken that came first. They found that the egg shells are formed because of a protein found only in a chicken’s ovaries. So basically an egg can exist only if it has been inside a chicken. 🙂
I always say the egg. This is because evolutionary theory says that animals change through genetic mutations. The thing that laid the first egg that hatched into a chicken may not have been a chicken as we know it, but some other similar bird that had a mutation in the genes that created the chicken egg. Evolution is a very gradual thing though, so the thing that laid the egg would have been very similar to a chicken.
