This is a difficult one. My parents are quite religious and have brought me up to believe in God. However, being a scientist I do find it difficult to agree with everything. Hence, I enjoy having conversations about religion and hearing other people’s opinions. I have been on the committee of the Edinburgh University Hindu Society since I started my PhD which has helped me to think more openly. My current opinion is that there may be a ‘God’ or a God-like figure as this is common to the vast majority of religions of Earth (which can’t be a coincidence) but I don’t believe in all of the stories. To me, they are just fiction.

I don’t believe in god, but many scientists do and I have no problem with this.

My opinion is that just because we can’t explain something yet with science, we shouldn’t believe that this is the result of a god/gods. In future, we may well be able to explain these things. However, this is just my opinion and I can see why others might believe that a god has written some of the laws of the universe. It’s important to keep an open mind!

I don’t believe in deities or godly entities the way they are presented by all of the stories. I prefer to have my own interpretation of things. Scientists have explained many things that were previously attributed to god/gods in a solid scientific way, and I believe that in the near future we will explain many more things. However, many scientists believe in god and I certainly respect that.

      Hi Amy,

I personally sit on the fence when it comes to believing in God. I do not believe many of the stories that surround God as there’s evidence to suggest that many of the things (i.e creating the Earth in seven days) couldn’t have happened. However at the same time, we have no evidence to say that a God doesn’t exist– so until there’s solid evidence one way or another, I’m going to keep an open mind!

      Hi everyone,

As a resident of Northern Ireland I have lived in a very religiously charged envirnoment. However, now that my country has entered a peace process people can think more freeely about religion.

I personally do not believe in God. I believe it was created as a tool of fear for the common peoples. Religions do have some good points i.e. love one another but also are based on old and biggoted fews i.e. the bible can be interpreted as sexist, racist and homophobic.

I respect everyone opinion on this topic but it certainly is a question which is quite difficult to answer

      Dwaine
