Cloning is a process where genetic information/DNA is copied to form a new but identical individual. This is a common natural process with some plants, bacteria and insects. Scientist have been trying to clone the DNA of larger organisms to produce genetically identical individual. The most famous example is that of Dolly the Sheep (who was cloned by scientists at the University of Edinburgh!). You would never consider cloning a human being as this would be incredibly unethical, amongst all the other problems that can occur. However, the information scientist learn from doing these kind of procedure can be very valuable understanding the roles of the genes in our DNA and can help us in finding the causes of certain diseases.

Cloning can also refer to simply the copying and replication of DNA. I do this quite often in the lab to learn more about the genes and proteins that I am interested in.
