When I was finishing my physics degree I needed to get a job at the end and wanted to stay in science. I applied for a few different science and engineering jobs (Rolls-Royce, BBC research and development are the ones that I can remember) and to be a trainee medical physicist. Medical physicists work in the areas of healthcare that involve imaging (including x-ray, ultrasound and MRI), radiation (nuclear medicine, radiotherapy) and lasers. I found much of the work done in these areas a bit routine and boring, but the bits of research that I did were great. I was particularly interested in MRI as there are a lot of people working on some very clever ways to use the scanner. As MRI is very safe, we can scan healthy people to test things out and we can use the scanner to look at the body in lots of different ways. We can just look at the water in the body or just the fat or just the blood vessels. We can get really detailed pictures of things by taking our time, or do really fast pictures so we can see organs like the heart that move really fast.
