When I was at primary school I often read science books and tried to do experiments at home. I was pretty sure I wanted to be a scientist, but during secondary school I became very interested in music and and thought I wanted to work in the music industry. I was particularly interested in acoustics and becoming a sound engineer in a recording studio. I studied physics at university because I decided that even if I didn’t want to work in science it would be a good degree that would give me skills in maths, computing and problem solving that I could use in other areas, including sound engineering. While I was at university I decided that I really wanted to carry on trying to understand complicated scientific problems and ideas and the music industry didn’t seem like a good place to do this. As I’ve progressed, I become more and more sure of my decision.
