      People have different metabolisms, I think for both genetic and environmental reasons. A faster metabolism means that you burn energy more quickly and are less likely to gain weight. I think there are various diseases that affect your metabolism (like an under-active thyroid). The reason we gain weight though is that we consume more calories than we burn. So if we do exercise we burn calories and we can eat more without gaining weight.
